About the design
The original name for Pac-Man was actually PuckMan. Paku paku taberu is a popular Japanese phrase for gobbling something up, with "paku paku" mimicking the sound of a snapping mouth and "taberu" meaning "to eat." The name was changed to Pac-Man for international releases as a preventative measure against defacement of the arcade machines by changing the P to an F.
